Free VAT Invoice Creator

A full VAT invoice needs a unique invoice number, your name, address and VAT registration number, the invoice date and the time of supply if different, your customer's name and address, a description of each item with its quantity and unit price, the VAT rate for each item, the total excluding VAT, the total VAT and any discount.

If the total including VAT is £250 or less, you can issue a simplified VAT invoice. It needs your name, address and VAT number, the time of supply, a description of what you supplied, the VAT rate and the total including VAT. Anything over £250 needs a full VAT invoice.

The standard rate is 20%, the reduced rate is 5% for items such as domestic energy, and some goods are zero-rated at 0%, such as most food and children's clothing. Set the right rate on each line and the totals are worked out for you.

You must register for VAT once your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a 12-month period, and you can register voluntarily below that. If you are not registered, do not charge VAT or show a VAT number; use the standard invoice generator instead.

For some business-to-business sales, the customer accounts for the VAT instead of you, for example certain cross-border services and some construction work. Switch on the reverse charge option to add the note to your invoice, and check HMRC guidance to confirm it applies to your sale.
